Addressing Health Disparities through Education, Wellness and Nutrition Programming and Action In Western New York
OUR REQUEST
Our appeal for funds in this offering through Give716 is to acquire additional dollars to continue to redevelop our newest site - the Holistic Wellness and Agricultural Education Campus! The Campus will feature a commercial kitchen for classes on nutrition and meal planning as well as a 5,000 sq ft hydroponic farm on site for providing to more of our neighbors in-need and for our various education programs.
At BGG we work weekly to provide a families and individuals fresh, non-GMO grown nutritious produce with additional classes to learn how to shop for, prepare and serve the meals that will help abate health disparities such as Diabetes, Obesity, Hypertension and Cardiac-related illnesses through our Fruit & Veggies Prescription Programs (FVRx). And everyone benefits in the long run with reduced health care costs as well as your taxes! Just think how far a gift of $100 would go!
FVRx also provides systems to waylay diseases related to poor nutrition through innovative outreach and services. In the FVRx program, BGG partners with the Community Health Centers of Buffalo and Niagara Falls (CHCB), and Niagara Street and Broadway Pediatrics (both clinics of the Oishei Children’s Hospital). FVRx provides patient meetings with a nutritionist who provides the patient's nutrition reports to their physicians. Physicians then determine the patient's nutritional needs and BGG provide the fruits and vegetables at no cost to those in need. FVRx also supplies patients with dietary information and recipes along with interactive cooking demonstrations throughout the year. And, we recently added our Childhood Obesity program along with working with Vets and their families in conjunction with FVRx.
BUT, WE DO MORE!
Nutrition is most neglected due to a shortage of proper grocery outlets. Poor nutrition vastly contributes to health issues that include diabetes, hypertension, obesity and other related issues. We also address these health disparities medically and holistically through our newest site that is currently under renovation as Buffalo's first East Side Holistic Wellness and Agricultural Education (Ag Ed) Campus on Manhattan Avenue.
OUR PARTNERS
We also work within a nonprofit-led cross-sector collaboration structure with other nonprofits, for-profit businesses, the University at Buffalo, CHCB, Cornell University, Johns Hopkins University, Central State University, University of Minnesota, Harvard, and many others to create a hub of wellness and systemic change while addressing the physical and mental health of our client base, creating a healthy balance for our constituents.
Our partnerships allow us to deliver essential programming including a corporate wellness division which embeds services into local businesses and universities; nutrition education and agricultural programming for elementary and high school students; and our "Pathways" education system that includes introducing our high school students to colleges and universities that offer both Agriculture and Green Technologies degrees.
Further, our six greenhouses (Glenwood Farm) along with our new vertical growing farm on our Zenner Street Food Hub also provides essential space for additional nutrition and growing education components, expanding our distribution from 10+ tons of fresh, locally and nutritiously grown produce each year.
